[ PROLOGUE ]
Art ----- It’s hard to maintain any radical perspective in a series of endless escapes. Any reflection through a medium causes the medium to reflect itself. We are at times confused as to whether this is the “outside” or “inside” of our perception. I would like to offer a passage at the border between these two points. This is a film featuring Jeonju. The Jeonju I would like to showcase is a passage, a third space for those seeking the true nature of perception at the boundary between the inside and outside of our own perceptions. I hope that you will have a delightful journey of thinking. Good luck! ■

예술.. 그 끊임없는 탈주의 연속에서 래디컬(Radical)한 시선을 유지하는 건 어렵습니다. 매체(Media)를 통한 반성은 그 매체조차 반성케 만들고, 가끔은 인식(認識)의 ‘밖’인지 인식의 ‘내부’인지 조차 혼돈스럽습니다. 이제, 그 경계에 서서 통로를 제공하고자 합니다. 여기, ‘전주를 찍은 필름’이 있습니다. 제가 보여드리고자 하는 ‘전주’는 인식의 바깥도 인식의 내부도 아닌, 그 고민의 경계에서 진정한 본질(本質)을 추구하는 분들을 위한 파사쥬(Passage)이며, 제 3의 공간입니다. 여러분의 사유(思惟)에 즐거운 여정이 되시기를 바랍니다. 행운을 빕니다. ■

[ ARTIST STATEMENT ]
“What is the nature of Jeonju, my home I consider?”
I raised this question suddenly one day even though Jeonju has been the site of my life. Not too long ago, Jeonju Hanok Village was not like it is now. The staple food of the Jeonju people is neither bibimbap nor kongnamul gukbap (bean sprout and rice soup). Of course, “Jeonjuians” also prefer smartphones to calligraphy or hanji. Please ask those of Jeonju how much they know about pansori. The images of Jeonju that strangers to the place think up are nothing but blind, false images and vacant notions. Nobody is able to present a perfect description and showcase of Jeonju. Can the true nature of Jeonju be conveyed by those who have resided there for over 100 years? I, on the other hand, have succeeded in capturing the nature of Jeonju. The nature of the city that you wish to grasp is in this film, The Jeonju. ■

‘내가 생각하는 내 고향 전주의 본질(Essence)은 무엇인가?’
당연하다고 생각하며 살아왔던 터전이었지만 어느 순간 고민이 들었다. 지금의 전주 한옥마을은 불과 얼마 전까지만 해도 이렇지(?) 않았다. 전주 사람들의 주식(主食)은 비빔밥도 콩나물 국밥도 아니다. 당연한 말이지만, 한지(韓紙)에 붓글씨 보다는 스마트폰을 선호한다. 전주 사람들에게 물어보라.. 판소리에 대해 과연 얼마나 알고 있는가? 이방인들이 생각하는 ‘전주’라는 이미지는 맹목적인 허상(虛像)이면서 동시에 하나의 관념(觀念)에 불과하다. 그 누구도 전주라는 도시를 완벽히 말할 수 없고 보여줄 수도 없다. 아니면, 전주에서 백여 년 넘게 사신 분들의 이야기로 전주의 본질이 전달 될 수 있을까? 하지만, 나는 전주의 본질을 촬영하는데 성공하였다. 그리고, 당신이 보고자 하는 ‘The Jeonju’는 바로 이 필름 안에 있다. ■
